Centre for Aboriginal Studies

The Centre for Aboriginal Studies is an indigenous-managed academic centre at the Bentley campus. The centre was established in 1983, although programs for indigenous students at Curtin were operating from 1974. The Centre for Aboriginal Studies is at the forefront of educational change through the development of innovative programs, policies and indigenous-directed research. The centre is closely involved with the indigenous community based on a two-way exchange of ideas, influences and practices - a process that produces culturally-appropriate education.

The Perth-based Aboriginal Advisory Committee is a primary means of community engagement for the centre. The committee works closely with the Centre for Aboriginal Studies, advising and making recommendations on issues affecting the lives of Aboriginal people. Input is also received from indigenous people working in Aboriginal communities and organisations as part of the centre's block release courses. Regular liaison and shared programs with Aboriginal organisations, TAFE centres, prisons and schools is another important element of the centre's community involvement.
