The Faculty of Science and Engineering has embraced the innovative use of interactive online media to provide students the opportunity to engage in meaningful learning experiences. Learning objects including simulations, video demonstrations, custom designed online activities and 360° virtual experiences that offer students greater access and control over when and how they engage in learning, increase student engagement in class and provide an equitable alternative in case physical attendance is not possible.

Explore some of the many interactive learning objects developed by the Faculty Learning Engagement Team (FLET).

School of Civil and Mechanical Engineering (CME)

The following pre-laboratory modules are designed to provide students with consistent laboratory demonstrations and equitable access to increase their preparedness for laboratory tasks. The modules guide students through a learning sequence that focuses on developing underpinning knowledge, procedure and technique of conducting laboratory experiments.

School of Molecular and Life Sciences (MLS)

Simulations allow students to adopt the role of a professional and engage in problem solving and decision-making process that results in authentic outcomes. Furthermore, advancements in 360° virtual reality technology is enabling students to access locations that would otherwise be limited or restricted.

WA School of Mines (WASM)

Pre-laboratory modules are run concurrently with rotating student groups on a fortnightly basis. To ensure students are adequately prepared prior to attending a lecture, pre-laboratory activities have been developed for each experiment. Following a template of safety, experiment setup and procedure; students are provided with highly interactive, low content activities to ensure they are ready to conduct a set experiment.

School of Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS)

Field trips are an essential part of practicing and applying conceptual and technical knowledge however, access and availability to trips may result in an inequity across students. The following virtual learning experience guides students through learning sequences that aid knowledge construction and skills development. The second project is an example of how animation aids in developing a mental model of the inner workings of the earth where it’s not possible for humans to visit.
