The application of electrical engineering in an increasing number of disciplines poses a challenge for electrical engineers, who must be able to draw on expert knowledge from a wide range of areas, in addition to designing systems that function optimally, reliably, safely and with new features.
Our courses are designed to meet this challenge, by providing a strong overview of the field and encouraging students to make their mark by having them specialise in embedded systems, emerging power systems, or electronics and communications.
We have strong research capabilities in embedded systems, power generation, renewable energies, signal processing, smart grids and wireless communication technologies.
As the IT industry changes, product-specific skills can quickly become obsolete. The focus of our computing courses is to convey fundamental knowledge and skills to our students, to help them become life-long learners and build sustainable careers.
Our courses are based on the curricula recommendations of two respected professional IT associations: IEEE Computer Society and the Association for Computing Machinery. The courses are developed in consultation with an industry advisory board representing the IT industry, and are accredited by the Australian Computer Society.
These courses are backed by our strong research capabilities across artificial intelligence, computer graphics, database management, large-scale pattern recognition, parallel and distributed computing, and software engineering.
Cyber shield to filter out malicious traffic
Curtin researchers have developed an innovative cyber security solution – HyprFire – to prevent large scale cyber-attacks, similar to the 2016 attack on the Australian Census website.
Curtin’s discipline area of Physics and Astronomy works closely with the Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy (CIRA), which focuses on scientific and technological advances in the field, and is involved in the Square Kilometre Array and the Murchison Widefield Array, as well as the investigation of active galactic nuclei and radio galaxies, transient radio phenomena and pulsars.
Physics graduates have some of the most exciting jobs throughout their careers. Their problem-solving skills, enhanced by the study of theoretical and practical physics, together with strengths in mathematics and computing, make them highly sought after by many employers.
In the Australian Government’s Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) 2018 assessment, Curtin University is ranked above world standard for Physical Sciences, and well above world standard for Astronomical and Space Sciences.
We believe mathematics underpins a range of professions, not just a single career.
Our courses impart mathematical principles and ways of thinking to our students and encourage them to pursue further research. Areas that our students have specialised in after graduating include actuarial science, business improvement, data analytics, finance and software engineering.
